Designing a room for the most important people in the home? These tiny citizens are tough customers and their moods, tastes, and needs change with time, sometimes even hours! Still designing a kids' room is always an exciting opportunity to create a space that's not only fun but functional and adaptable.
We bring to you some curated ideas & useful tips to design a great space that your kids will enjoy and thrive in.
Go Gender Neutral
If your family is still growing could be a wise idea to go gender-neutral in the kids' room. Even otherwise kids may not always take a preference for the traditional pink for girls and blue for boys idea. if your bub has a strong preference for a color, then go for it. However, if you're still planning to grow the family or unsure what the color choices would be stick to colors that will appeal to both genders.
2) Push That Kid's Bed To The Corner
We know as a rule in interior design, it is usually not advisable to keep beds in a corner. However, kids' room can be an exception to this rule, and we will tell you why.
Space is at a premium these days and kids' rooms have to serve a multifunctional space, where they get ample room to play, work, create or simply jump around. Keeping a bed in the center of the room may not always be ideal in smaller-sized rooms. Hence if you're trying to optimize for space, push that bed to the corner creating a cozy sleeping zone, and free up the floor to create an activity area or just space for free play. Also, using a cushioned bed rail along the wall helps prevent accidental bumpings into the wall.
3) Let Them Scribble Away
Kids will inevitably scribble and write on the walls and we adults will lose sleep over it. However, this is an important developmental milestone and part of the growing-up journey, that we don't want to curb or miss. Hence, why not designate a space in their room where they can scribble away to glory, bring their big ideas to life, or simply pretend play their teacher!!
Use a wall in their room, and paint it with chalkboard paint till an accessible height, and watch them go at it. This is an easy and cost-effective upgrade and also makes for a design feature in their room. Wardrobes are also a great spot to do this. Trust us, this will go a long way in letting kids be kids and still saving your walls around the house.
4) Add A Play Gym & Rope Ladders
Children have a lot of energy to expend which needs to be channeled properly. They must have lots of free play and physical activity is vital for their growth and development. Outdoor play for long durations is difficult (like we used to have back in our childhood) or as the pandemic has shown us there can be times of even no outdoor play!
Adding that play gym or if there is a space crunch, go vertical and add a climber wall and rope ladders in the room's corner is a great kids' room design idea. They will play to their heart's content, have oodles of fun, and blow off all that energy for a sound sleep at night.
5) Height Adjustable Desk System
Kids need a space to study and kids will grow. Two facts, we need to work around a space that will last you a couple of years before they outgrow or ask for a design upgrade.
The question we face here is whether to go for a kid-size desk which the child may outgrow in a couple of years or settle for a standard height desk setup, which might not be easy for them to use at younger ages. If that's the dilemma you're faced with, a height-adjustable desk system is a great way to ensure that your kid has an ergonomic setup that caters to all ages. It does not even have to be a fancy motorized system, but a clever workaround that you can ask your carpenter or interior designer to make with wooden grooves in the wall in which the desk can slide in at different heights and you're good to go!
6) Create A Reading Nook
Reading is a precious habit that pays dividends throughout life and as parents we all want our kiddos to pick that habit young. So if space permits, why not make a designated reading nook for the kids to store and display their prized book collection and spend some time each day reading. If space and budget are a constraint, it's not even necessary to have a fancy set up, but a simple arrangement like a floor cushion thrown in a corner, some wall shelves to stow away books, and cozy lighting to create an inviting space to read.
7) Bunk It Up!
Bunk beds are the most fun and timeless kids' room design idea and a very clever solution if space is a concern and the room needs to be shared by siblings. Bunk beds have always been a hot favorite with kids as they automatically add that fun element of being able to go up and down. However, bunk beds need to be done carefully, to avoid any kind of unwarranted accidents. The access to the top bunk should be easy and well secured, heights of the beds should be well spaced out so that none of the kids feel closed off, upper bunk properly secured with bed rails etc. These beds allow you to free up floor space in a kids' room allowing more area for other activities and fee play.
8) Add Low Height Storage
A must-have in any kids' room is low-height storage, which is accessible to them at all times. We'll tell you why.
When the kids have access to their toys as per their interests and moods, they are less likely to nudge you every fifteen minutes for a newer toy. However, more importantly, its a nifty trick to inculcate the habit of tidying up in the little ones. Like they easily take things out, they can be encouraged to pick things up and store them back in their designated areas. Pull-out cube baskets are a very easy and budget-friendly way to implement this. Even if things are a bit messy inside the baskets, it's not pricking the eye and the space looks clutter-free easily.
9) Theme It Up
Having a theme around which you design your kids' space makes the whole process easier and keeps their likings and preferences met. However, choose something that will grow with them instead of getting out of style or interest quickly. A jungle theme for instance is a hot favorite for nurseries and stays with the child for some years as they grow, or space, adventure, instead of focusing on their favorite cartoon character (which they might outgrow). These can be easily updated as they grow older by changing accessories.
10) Keep it low
Along with toy storage, keep in mind to make accessing the wardrobes and other cabinets easy for the little ones. In standard-height wardrobes, ensure accessibility by installing cabinet pulls & knobs at a suitable height for kids. Use height-adjustable internal shelving which can be changed as needed. The best part is that it's quite easy to switch them up later without needing to redo the wardrobes entirely.
